Boats docked in Arbroath Harbour on a sunny day.
What is North Sea Poets?

We are an east-facing group of seven poet-friends who decided to bring some of our various activities under one storm-battered umbrella, and create a teaching platform for poetry, with a strong focus on artistic and technical excellence.

Who are your classes for?

Any serious student of poetry, whether writer or reader, anywhere on the planet. Some classes are directed solely towards poets, and some towards both readers and poets. We assume all poets are also readers!

What kind of classes do you run?

For the most part, classes will either be workshops or masterclasses capped at 20-25 students, or webinar-style classes that anyone can join. All classes will run for either 90 minutes or two hours.

How do I hear about new classes?

Just sign up here or at the foot of the page for our mailing list, and you’ll be the first to hear about any new and upcoming classes. Our Substack will offer regular posts on the subject of poetry, poems, poets and the writing life. But don’t worry if it’s not for you – you’ll still get all the up-to-date North Sea Poets news directly to your email inbox. You can also follow us on Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram, and X.

How do I book?

Look on the events page and just click on More Info to learn more, or Buy Tickets if you're ready to sign up. If the class is full, we’ll tell you immediately and pop you on a waiting list. If classes are greatly oversubscribed, we may run them twice – if so, we will let you know as soon as possible.

Do you do concessionary rates?

We do. We operate these on trust. If you can’t afford the full course or workshop/webinar fee, just pay the concessionary rate. If you can afford the full fee, please pay it, as it will allow us to offer completely free places in the future.

How do I join a class?

We conduct our classes over Zoom. Shortly after buying a ticket, you will be emailed the Zoom link for the class. On the day, click on the link five minutes before the class is advertised to start, and we’ll see you there!

What if I'm running late to a class?

If you're less than 15 minutes late, no problem! If you're more than 15 minutes late, please be aware that you may have to wait in the waiting room until someone can let you in.

What if I miss a class I have booked for?

Don’t worry – we will supply time-limited access to a recording of the class for anyone who has purchased a ticket. You’ll miss nothing.

Can I suggest topics for workshops, webinars or masterclasses?

You most certainly can – as niche or as broad as you like – and you should. We’d love to hear from you. Drop us a line here.

Why do you not accept funding from other bodies?

We want the freedom to teach in the way we think best, and build our platform through as direct a relationship with the community of writers and readers as we can foster. We all believe in the principle of trust, and in our approx. 200 years of collective experience, the fewer layers of external administration involved, the better.
