About the event
Water is an ambiguous space. Aboard the boat, far out of sight of land, we are abruptly cut off from our old world. From the ancient immrama to the plight of today’s refugees, the sea voyage, dangerous and often dreadful, and with a high risk of failure. It is also a period of great physical and metaphysical insecurity, wholly “betwixt and between” (Lynda Mannik, Migration by Boat). How can we word this sense of dislocation?
In this session we will read a selection of poems of migration and arrival, and discuss strategies we might use in our own work to plant our flag, if only for the time being.
This workshop is for you if
• you are new to writing poetry, or you are already writing but would like to rethink some old habits
• you are interested in the relationship between place and creative practice
